My father normalised crying for me!

I was in 8th or 9th standard. My dad was teaching me to ride a scooty. It was my maternal grandfather’s. The scooty wasn’t starting, my cousin said, “That old thing, just press the damn accelerator!”. My father did that, carefully, but off it went, up the wall, my dad’s knees against the wall. Few minutes, I could see blood coming out. I could see he wasn’t able to bring it under control. He was saying that to the people around. I wondered how could he smile even then! I was seeing the blood and how every second it was becoming more severe. I had realised nobody could offer any help. I went to him, tried reaching the upper part of the scooty and rotating the key.

His legs were in bad shape. We were in a village. We could manage an injection. It was all bruised and blood oozing out of some places. He was applying the boric powder or something. I could hardly say anything, I went to the verandah crying. My grandmother told dad that she’s saying its her fault. He said, “Dear, its not you, you were just trying to learn!”. I wouldn’t listen. He told grand-mom, “Let her be, she’ll be okay”.
